In high school I fell in love with the movie Evita. Watched it every time I could. (If there was any confusion about my sexuality, my slight obsession with Evita cleared that up). So when I found myself with 24 hours in Buenos Aires I had one mission: visit Maria Eva Duarte de Peron’s tomb at La Recoleta Cemetery.

I was staying in Monserrat, a somewhat hipster neighborhood, and decided to enjoy the walk to Recoleta, the “pinky up” side of town. BA is gorgeous and highly walkable and there’s lots of French influence in the architecture. After about 90 minutes of strolling, eating, and photos I arrived at Recoleta. According to wikipedia, it became a public cemetery in 1822 and was designed using the help of a French engineer. It’s beautiful and sweeping – covering 14 acres. Spread throughout the expansive space rests presidents, artists, scientists, and others who helped shape Argentina.

I made my way to the Duarte family plot. Naturally there was a line and it was inspiring to see so many people ready to pay their respects. While alive she inspired millions around the world and decades later, her legacy still carries in the hearts of many. As I continued through the cemetery reading names and epitaphs and looking at a few pictures of the deceased, I couldn’t help but think of my own legacy.

I’ve had an interest in photography for quite a while, but it seemed this distant life. I never identified as an artist and I couldn’t (can’t?) afford some of the gear, but I’m learning that I just need to get started with where I am and what I have. It’s much easier said than done, and I know I’m not alone. Many of my friends in their mid-thirties and early forties are in this space of “what do I want to do with my life?”

Visiting Eva Peron’s tomb reminded me that instead of spending my days binging the latest Netflix show, I needed to spend more time capturing the moments around me and sharing my life experiences here on this blog. It’s my hope that someone somewhere finds hope and inspiration in my words and photos.

I look forward to this journey and inspiring someone, somewhere to pursue the life they want.
